Choice of the Managing Director Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Choice of the Managing Director - Essay Example Introduction In case of the expatriate operations, the functions of management and leadership are to a large extent dependent on a much broader concept called ‘diversity’ (Kirton & Greene 2005, p. 127). Diversity is a very expansive concept that includes within its ambit a little more than an individual’s looks, colour, traits, attitudes and status (Kirton & Greene 2005). In the given scenario the managing director to be selected will be required to manage, function and lead in an environment that will carry a quintessentially Vietnamese flavour. As the commonsense suggest, it will be much easier for a Vietnamese managing director to manage the manufacturing operations being undertaken in Vietnam. However, in an academic context, the choice to be made is necessarily required to be explained in a rational and factual manner. As per Geert Hofstede, the salient values in any organization are to a large extent determined by the predominant culture of that place. Hofst ede grouped the cultural values of varied countries and regions into four main groups that are called the Hofstede cultural dimensions (Baptiste, Dodor & Rana 2007). ... Vietnam has a Power Distance Index of 70, which means that in the Vietnamese society, people do readily accept a hierarchical system, without registering any objections or problems (Hofstede 1996). Individualism is a cultural attribute that determines as to the extent to which the members in a society tend to remain independent. On this dimensions, Vietnam has a score of 20 that means that in Vietnam it is the group affiliations that stand to dominate over individual aspirations and ambition (Tuan & Napier 2000). Masculinity is a cultural dimension that explains whether a society values success and ambition or whether it gives priority to the overall quality of life over success, achievement and ambition (Hofstede 1996). Vietnam has a score of 40 on this dimension which means that Vietnam is particularly a feminine society where solidarity and quality of life holds a sway over success and achievement (Reynolds 2000). Hofstede also propounded one more cultural dimension that is Uncert ainty Avoidance. The Uncertainty Avoidance Index of a culture states as to what extent the people in a culture are comfortable with the anxiety and stress associated with the ambiguity inherent in the future (Hofstede 1996). Vietnam has a low Uncertainty Avoidance Index of 30 which means that the Vietnamese hate uncertainty and are mostly willing to do away with strict norms and principles in favour of ease and certainty (Tuan & Napier 2000). It will be really interesting to see as how the Australian culture scores on the four Hofstede cultural dimensions. Australia- Cultural Dimensions Australia has a Power Distance Index of 36, very low as compared to Vietnam. Translated practically it means that in the Australian work culture, hierarchies

Unit 2 Equlity, Diversity and Rights Essay Example for Free

Unit 2 Equlity, Diversity and Rights Essay Discriminatory practice is infringement of rights. This means that you are not respecting individual’s rights or beliefs. (Mills, 2013) There are many ways that people can discriminate against others. Discrimination can involve making a judgement on someone; whether it be for race, gender, sexuality or disability. Discrimination is an unfair act based on prejudice. Sexuality: There are many different sexualities. These include straight, lesbian, gay and bi sexual. A service provider may discriminate against a service user’s sexuality. If a gay, elderly man in a care home needs to be washed, a male member of staff might refuse to do this because it may make him feel uncomfortable knowing the man’s sexuality. This would be seen as discriminatory practice. Disability: Many care homes have service users that may have a form of disability. This can be anywhere from a learning disability, to a physical disability. Some service providers may not approach the service user (if they have a disability) to inform them something, they might just approach the nurse/carer beside them. Service providers would do this because they wouldn’t know if the service user would be able to understand. This would be discriminatory practice. Age: In a Health and Social care environment, only people under a certain age may be allowed on day trips. This would be done and the activity could involve too much physical strength and ability for the elderly service user. This would be seen as discrimination to the elderly. Social class: In a health and social care setting, people may be discriminated against due to their social class. A service user may be treated with more respect because of their higher social c lass than someone who has a low social class. For an example, someone who was very successful in life may be treated with more respect be seen as more important than others. This would be discrimination against the elderly. Religion: In a caring and social environment, religion should always be accepted and respected. In some cases it is not. Because of stereotyping, a care/social worker may refuse to deal with a service user because of their religion. For example, if a service user is muslin, a service provider may refuse to deal with them, purely because of their religious beliefs. This would be seeing as a discriminatory practice. Describe the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who used health or social care services All of the discriminatory practises stated above would have a huge, negative impact on the service users. Sexuality: Social workers may not recommended a foster family to foster children if they are a gay couple. There would be no reasonable excuse for this act. This would be discrimination against the couple. It is likely that this would strongly affect the couple and possibly ruin their self-esteem and their confidence. Disability: In the example stated before, by not approaching the service user directly, it is indicating that you think the service user is unable to respond to what you are saying. This is discriminatory practise. This could leave the service user feeling depressed, isolated and ignored. Age: In the example used previously, if you are leaving people over a certain age out of an activity, this is limiting them to what they can do. You are leaving them out of an activity, likely to leave them feeling lonely. This is unfair and discriminatory practice. Therefore the service user may end up feeling isolated (because they aren’t involved in the group) and lose self-confidence which could affect other areas of their life. Social class: An example of someone with a low social class feeling isolated would be a former prisoner who has now moved into a care home. Service providers may assume the worse of him and therefore treat this service user with little respect. This may cause the service user to become isolated. Religion: Another discriminatory practice would be sex. If a Muslim lady was in a care home, they could be discriminated against by insisting that they would have to be dealt with by a male service provider. Another would be to offer a menu with the main meat on the dishes being pork as it is against the Muslim belief to eat pork. This would not be respecting their religious beliefs and therefore would be discriminatory practic e. This could cause the service user to suffer low self-esteem (which means that someone is losing their self-worth and self-esteem), humiliation, and worthlessness. Asses the effects on those using the services of three different discriminatory practices in health and social care settings Sexuality: If a homosexual couple were recommended to not foster children, and this did cause them to lose confidence in adopting, it could lead to depression and anxiety at their status in society. They may then feel it necessary to hide their sexual orientation. This could then make them feel unworthy in life which could lead to severe depression. Social class: If a former prisoner in the care home did feel isolated, it wouldn’t be surprising if they may rarely join into group activates. This would ultimately lower their self-confidence and mean that they would withdraw more over time. If this was to happen, they could find themselves being depressed and having very low self-esteem. Religion: If a Muslim woman was forced to be treated by a male doctor, even after asking not to be, she would be unable to use the service, purely because of her religious beliefs. This would be discriminatory practice. She would then feel humiliated, which would ruin her self-confidence. If this happened then she may not have the confidence to use the health service again which could end up with serious consequences.

Advantages of Repeater in Networking

Advantages of Repeater in Networking Router: Routers are devices which connect two are more networks that use similar protocol. A router consists of hard ware and software. Routers operate at a network layer of O.S.I model. Routers use logical and physical address to connect two or more logically separate network. They make this connection by organizing the large network into logical network segment (some times small sub network or sub nets). Each of these sub nets is given a logical address. Data is grouped into packets or block of data. Advantages of Router: They use high level of intelligence to rout data.   Routers can also act as a bridge to handle non rout able protocols such as NetBEUI (Network Bios Extended User Interface) Disadvantages of Router: High level of intelligence takes more processing time which can affect performance Routers are very complicated which installation and maintenance difficult. 2) Gateways: Gateways are devices which connect two are more networks that use different protocols. They are similar in function to routes but they are more powerful and intelligent devices. A gateway can actually convert data so that network with an application on a computers on the other side of the gateway e.g a get way can receive email messages in one format in convert them into another format. Gateway can operate at all seven layer of OSI model. Since Gateway perform data conversion so they are slower in speed and very expensive devices. 3) Repeaters: Repeaters are used within network to extend the length of communication. Data process through transmission media in the farm of waves or signals. The transmission media weaken signals that move through it. The weakening of signal is called attenuation. If the data is to be transmitted beyond the maximum length of a communication media, signals have amplified. The devices that are used to amplify the signals are called repeaters. Repeaters work at the physical layer of OSI model. Repeaters are normally two ports boxes that connect two segments. As a signal comes in one port, it is regenerated and sends out to the other port. Advantages of Repeater: Repeaters easily extend the length of network. They require no processing over head, so very little if any performance degradation occurs. It can connect signals from the same network type that use different types of cables. Disadvantages of Repeaters: Repeaters cannot be used to connect segments of different network types. They cannot be used to segment traffic on a network to reduce congestion . Many types of network have a limit on the number of network s that can be used at once . 4) Bridges: Bridges are used to connect similar network segments. A bridge does not pass or signals it receives. When a bridge receives a signal, it determines its destination by looking at its destination and it sends the signals towards it. For example in an above figure a bridge has been used to join two network segments A AND B. When the bridge receives the signals it read address of both sender and receiver. If the sender is a computer in segment A and the receiver is also segment A, it would not pass the signals to the segments B. It will however pass signals if the sender is in one segment and the receiver in other segment. Bridge works at the data link layer of O.S.I model. Advantages of Bridges: Bridge extends network segments by connecting them together to make one logical network. They can affect the segment traffic between networks by filtering data if it does not need to pass. Like repeaters they can connect similar network types with different cabling. Disadvantages of Bridges:   Bridge possess information about the data they receive with can slow performance. 5) Hub: Hubs are basically multi ports repeaters for U.T.P cables. Some hubs have ports for other type of cable such as coaxial cable. Hubs range in size from four ports up to and for specific to the network types. These are some hubs which are I. Passive Hub II. Active Hub III. Switch/ Intelligent Hub Passive Hub: It provides no signal regeneration. They are simply cables connected together so that the signal is broken out to other nodes with out regeneration. These are not used often today because of loss of cable length that is allowed. Active Hub: It acts as repeaters and regenerates the data signals to all ports. They have no real intelligence to tell weather the signal needs to go to all ports that is blindly repeated. Switch Hub: Switches are multi ports bridges. They filter traffic between the ports on the switch by using the address of computers transmitting to them. Switches can be used when data performance is needed or when collision need to be reduce. Advantages of Hub Hubs need almost no configuration. Active hub can extend maximum network media distance. No processing is done at the hub to slow down performance Disadvantages of Hub   Passive hubs can greatly limit maximum media distance.   Hubs have no intelligence to filter traffic so all data is send out on all ports whether it is need or not. Since hubs can act as repeaters the network using them must follow the same rules as repeaters 6) Modem: The device that converts digital signals into analog signals and analog signals to digital signals is called Modem. The word modem stands for modulation and demodulation. The process of converting digital signals to analog signals is called modulation. The process of converting analog signals to digital signals is called demodulation. Modems are used with computers to transfer data from one computer to another computer through telephone lines. Modems have two connections these are. Analog connection   Digital connection Analog connection: The connection between the modem and the telephone line is called analog connection. Types of Modem THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF MODEMS Internal modem External modem Digital connection: The connection of modem to computer is called digital connection INTERNAL MODEM: It fits into expansion slots inside the computer. It is directly linked to the telephone lines through the telephone jack. It is normally less inexpensive than external modem. Its transmission speed is also less external modem. EXTERNAL MODEM: It is the external unit of computer and is connected to the computer through serial port. It is also linked to the telephone line through a telephone jack. External modems are expensive and have more operation features and high transmission speed. Advantages of Modem Inexpensive hardware and telephone lines. ii. Easy to setup and maintain. Disadvantages of Modem i. Very slow performance.

Free Essay on Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter - Lasting Effect of Sin :: Scarlet Letter essays

Lasting Effect of Sin The Scarlet Letter Puritan society placed great importance upon a person's reputation. Without an honorable reputation a person is not worthy of respect from others in their society. Characters in this novel go through their lives struggling with themselves trying to cope with the guilt and shame associated with their actions. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter, he shows the lasting effect that sin has on Hester and Dimmesdale. Hester Prynne's guilt is the result of her committing adultery, which has a profound effect on her life. Hester is publicly seen with the scarlet letter when she first emerges out of the cold dark prison. "It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity and enclosing her in a sphere by herself " (Hawthorne 49). The spell that is mentioned is the scarlet letter, "so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom" (Hawthorne 49). The scarlet letter is what isolates her from everyone else because it symbolizes sin. Hester is in her very own sphere, a world of her own where her sin effects her livelihood and has completely isolated her from the world. Her entrance into the sphere marks the beginning of her guilt, it occurs when she is "in the prison after her first exposure to the crowd-her "moral agony" reflected in the convolutions that have seized the child; her pride, her daring" (Bloom 34). The prison marks the beginning of a new life f or Hester, a life full of guilt and isolation. Her "moral agony" (Bloom 34), is her guilt that is slowly surfacing while she faces the crowd realizing that she has been stripped of her pride and everything that was important to her in the past. The lasting effect of Hester's sin is the guilt that she now embodies due to her commiting adultery. The guilt that is associated with Hester's sin remains with her as an everlasting reminder of her sinful actions (Bloom 34). Guilt is a consequence of sin that Hester has to endure throughout her life. Hester's guilt begins starts to have a profound effect on her life and thinking. Hester's guilt has become very influential in her life making her unable to express herself freely. "Hester Prynne might have repaid them all with a bitter and disdainful smile. But under the leaden infliction which it was her doom to endure, she felt at moments as if she must needs (to) shriek" (Hawthorne 52-53).

Explain the impact of Jesus upon the world of his day and today’s society. Essay

In the beginning of John’s gospel there is a description of Jesus as ‘The Word’. Verse 2 ‘He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him. ’ Later in the same chapter John says ‘The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. ’ If that is true then Jesus was involved in the act of creation and so we must say that his impact is total. During his lifetime Jesus’ impact would have been relatively small – no media circus to follow him about and publicize his words and actions. He met thousands in a relatively small area, rather than millions world wide, and then, as now, he made both a positive and a negative impact upon individuals. H e would have been less well known than some modern figures such as Gandhi or Winston Churchill. But in Matthew 28 verse 19 and 20 Jesus tells his disciples to go to all nations and make disciples. This order, known as the Great Commission , was carried out by his followers in the years that ensued and they took the gospel message all round the world. Today, according to Adherents Web site there are estimated to be 2. 1 billion people who claim the name Christian, 33% of the world’s population, though it must be admitted that the title Christian means slightly different things to different groups, and has done throughout history. There are various calendars in operation in today’s world. Islam and Judaism for instance count the years differently for religious purposes, but for business purposes as well as religious ones, most of the world counts the years from the approximate date of Jesus’ birth. I have not yet discussed the spiritual impact, but this has been tremendous. Because of Jesus missionaries have explored the world, children have been educated and lives have been changed. The impact hasn’t always been a positive one, as when there have been differences between religious groups, both within Christianity and between Christians and those of other groups. In some parts of the world the impact is lessening, but in others it rises rapidly. Jesus continues to make a difference.
